February 27th 2011, Whitefish, MT—Former and retired United States Telemark team members claimed top podium spots at the Don K Subaru Telemark Sprint Classic held at Whitefish Mountain Resort on Saturday February 26, 2011. Five-time National Champion and Whitefish local, Kelsey Schmid-Sommer broke out of retirement and returned the podium as the top finisher in the women’s Elite category. In the men’s Elite division, former team member David Hobbs, also of Whitefish, was the victor.

Competitors were challenged with sub-zero temperatures and low-visibility racing down Ptarmigan Bowl but it didn’t discourage many veterans and new-comers alike from competing in the United States Telemark Ski Association sanctioned event. Sixteen competitors braved the cold and proved their abilities on the sprint classic race format which includes a Nordic style jump, 360 degree turn and a skate section.

In the women’s Elite, Regional team member, Maggie Doherty of Whitefish placed second. Former US team member, Suzanne Pattinson of Sandpoint, ID finished third. In the men’s Elite, another former US team member and Whitefish local, Jef Elliot placed second. In third was Whitefish resident and Regional team member Cole Schneider. Newcomer Joseph Fetherolf finished in fourth position.

Alongside veteran and accomplished US Telemark Ski team members, two juniors demonstrated their up and coming racing talent. Logan Morley of Bigfork, competing in his first telemark race, took home first prize. Galen Jamison of Whitefish, who’s already an experienced and eager junior telemark racer, placed second.
