2013 Sunlight Sprint Classic
The weather was great at this year’s Sunlight Sprint Classic race on January 19. Snow coverage was a little thin, so racers had gates and a few rocks to negotiate, but it was a good day of racing for the 23 competitors of all ages. There was a strong group of racers from the Vail Mountain School and from the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. Several racers traveled from out of state including Birk Larsen from Utah and Chris Henery and William Dorroh from Idaho.
Sierra Brill of Vail Mountain School was the fastest U18 woman racer, while Bailey Wallisch of Steamboat Springs had the top time for the U18 men. “team Barth” took the honors in the U14 division with Matilda Barth and Henry Barth as the top girl and boy, respectively, in that age group.
Jeffrey Gay was king of the mountain for the 2nd week in a row in the Expert division. After his first place finish at the Vail race last weekend, Jeffrey edged out the 2012 National Champion, Charlie Dresen, by just over a second. Charlie said, “Jeffrey is skiing well and really turning it up this year. He’s getting some great angles and setting the bar high as we head into nationals next month.” In third place was Birk Larsen of Salt Lake City.
Zoe Taylor was the fastest Expert woman, with Lyta Foulk in 2nd place.
