FOCUS on Carrie Johnson – 2003-2007 Team Member
Carrie Johnson is a smoke jumper. One of the toughest, most physically and mentally demanding jobs out there. I recently ran into Carrie in Whitefish, MT, where she calls home in the winter months. It is where she puts down her roots for the few months she’s not traveling around the country fighting wild fires. I know Carrie from her years on the US Telemark Ski team and asked her if she had any photos, news clippings and such that I could use to help build a timeline for USTSA. A week later, Carrie sent me a disk with over 600 photos of her travels during 2003, 2004 and 2005. These were her first 3 years as a team member, and her more active. In 2004, Carrie traveled to every World Cup race and ended the year as the 7th place woman overall on the World Cup circuit. By 2007 she had issues with her knee and retired from racing at the end of the season so she could focus on rehabing her knee and focus on her smoke jumping job.
In early 2007, this story about Carrie was published in Telemark Skier Magazine and is a view into her life as a Telemark Racer.
