30th Selkirk Classic – a fun filled race
The 30th Selkirk Classic race had two levels of competition at Schweitzer Mountain Resort on Sunday, February 13. While most competitors were there to ski their fastest, many also carried on the longstanding tradition of the costume contest. There were 46 competitors on this beautiful sunny, but breezy day.
In a sport with few young people, it was exciting to see 5 junior racers, The first place junior was 10 year old Farli Boden of Sandpoint, ID followed by another 10 year old, Hannah Hislop of Liberty Lake, WA. In third place was Galen Jamison, also 10, of Whitefish, MT. Fifteen year old Hunter Price, dressed as Darth Vadar, used his light saber to slash at each gate during the race, finishing in 4th place. In 5th place was Marshall Monro, age 10 of Sandpoint, who had only been on tele gear 4 times before the race. We’ll need to be watching these racers in the years to come.
The women’s elite winner was Kesey Schmid-Sommer of Whitefish, followed by Suzanne Pattinson of Sandpoint and Heidi Marcum of Whitefish.
The men’s elite winner was David Hobbs of Whitefish, followed by Brandon Moon of Sandpoint and Peter McMahon from Whitefish.
The men’s masters was the largest category of racers, but they can still ski FAST! Peter Faletto of Sandpoint took home the first place honors, followed by Scott Edgerton of Missoula and Scott Evans of Sandpoint.
Judging the costume contest was the toughest job of the day. The winning costume was the one pictured here, the racer with the number 30 on his hemet to represent 30 years of the Selkirk Classic. But when viewed from the other side, reads OR for Outdoor Experience, the sponsor of this event for 30 years.
Also seen speeding down the race course was: a speedo swimsuit (2nd Place), the Pope (3rd place), a traditional tele skier with skinny skis and leather boots, a Moose Drool Moose, Mighty Mouse, a clown, German Lederhosen, some colorful wigs, men in skirs and many more.
