2013 National Championships

USTSAThe US National Champions were crowned on February 24 at Howelsen Hill in Steamboat Springs.  The Men’s US Champion is Jeffrey Gay of Steamboat who won 2 out of 4 races this weekend.  Jeffrey was the runner up in 2012 and had already won 2 Colorado races this season.  In 2nd Place was Tommy Gogolen of Breckenridge who has come back from two knee surgeries in as many years.  Tommy had a solid weekend of racing with three 2nd place finishes.  In third place was Cory Snyder, the 2011 National Champion.  The women’s National Champion is Madi McKinstry of Steamboat who was also the 2011 Champion. Madi is living in France this season and is competing in the entire World Cup circuit.  In 2nd place was Zoe Taylor, the defending 2012 National Champion of Atlanta and Steamboat.  Zoe had 3 second place finishes this weekend.  Placing 3rd Overall was Sarah Carley of  New Hampshire in her second Nationals competition. The down side of the day was a crash after the jump by Maggie Doherty which resulted in a trip to the emergency room.  Maggie returned to Howelsen Hill in time for the awards, but will not be on the snow for awhile while she recovers from her injuries.  The men’s Citizen champion was newcomer Norm Helm, followed by Larry Bosche and Scott Edgerton.  This was a very competitive group of men. Rachel Rodney skied consistently all weekend in the women’s citizen category and was the overall winner.  All the junior racers kept up with the pace of the weekend and reminded everyone that they are the future of the sport.  Junior women Taylor Finn, Farli Boden,  Anna Allsberry and Aubrey Rohde and the Junior men Henry Barth and Cedar Mattole all have a great future in telemark skiing and racing.  Congratulations to All racers.  Thank you to the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club for hosting the event as well as Pinhead Red Wine and Big Sky Brewing for sponsoring the awards.
