Skiing History:

I learned to ski at Sleeping Giant Ski Area near the East entrance of Yellowstone National Park.  The Giant was a great small ski area with a t-bar and a rope tow as our only means of getting up the mountain, all 600’ of it.  I was taught to ski by some cowboys and my folks using skinny skis.  Unfortunately the hill closed for a few reasons and I moved on to skiing in Montana.

Red Lodge became my new winter home and I began my alpine ski training.  The bigger mountain and Silver Run Ski Team pushed my skiing abilities even further.  I was taught to plant my poles and use whatever else necessary to survive a trip down the icy-double fall line pitches of Lower Limited.   Lots of dedication and hard work led me to ski racing at Rocky Mountain College.

After four years of balancing the ski racing regime with doing my best at getting a good education I decided I needed something new.  I learned the free heel turn skiing Wolf Creek Pass, Colorado, with plenty of powder and sunshine to once again teach me how fun skiing can be.  It was quite a joy ending up on my head everyday learning to find that critical fore aft balance in the deep snow.  I definitely enjoyed Colorado and the simple joys of free skiing.

Moving back to Montana I learned what a telemark race really was.   Missoula has a great ski crowd and the people there ski harder then anywhere else.  I was also enticed to chase gates again only with a little twist, the free heel turn.  Obviously having some advantage from skiing gates with my alpine background, I had to learn how to incorporate the telemark turn into a racecourse.  After putting a little bit of dedication into telemark racing I look forward to having fun and enjoying the turn in and out of the course.

Competition Results:

Lots of good times, I look forward to getting even better results this year.

Goals, Attitude and Motivation:

I hope to become a little more consistent in this winter’s bigger races.  It would be absolutely fantastic to ski a race with zero penalties.  With telemark equipment any little bump can put you on your head.  So I guess I just want to smooth it all out.    I also hope to enjoy more powder days then anything else.  There is no skiing like searching out turns in the woods.

Why do you Telemark Race?

Viva la Hunsberger.

It’s the best way to ruin a powder day.  I don’t know how many times I have stood around waiting while the snow piled up.  However the people are great and I get my fair share of powder turns in a year. It’s definitely an interesting group of people.

Not a lot of attitude left after a classic race, usually you just feel great to finish.

Interesting Facts about yourself:

I live in the desert.
